We'll dive into the groundbreaking achievements of both the U.S. and the Soviet Union as they competed to reach new frontiers in space, starting with the launch of Sputnik 1in 1957 and the first successful American satellite, Explorer 1 on January 31, 1958. Through historical context, you'll gain insight into how these pivotal missions shaped the course of the Cold War and laid the foundation for future space exploration.
