Program Educator

Position Summary

The Program Educator provides outstanding educational public programming to guests of all ages, leading space themed programs both onsite as well as off-site. This position includes mostly nights and weekends with the occasional daytime program. Program Educator is part time (up to 15 hours/week) and reports to the Program Manager, while also working with the Education team and other staff on events and programs developed throughout the year.

Position Responsibilities

  • Program Delivery (85%)
    • Lead or assist with programs and events, both off-site and at the Observatory, catering to a diversity of learning styles and participant abilities
    • Develop and lead classes for the Observatory
      • Topics to be developed in coordination with the COC’s Astronomer
  • Astronomy Equipment Coordinator (10%)
    • Manage the Observatory’s Telescope Loan Program for members
    • Offer consultations for Observatory members
    • Lead professional development workshops with telescopes
    • Manage telescope training (Mitchel, Clark, or portable) for Observatory volunteers
    • Implement strategic plan re: telescopes and accessories for programs, loan, and donation/sale
  • Administrative (5%)
    • Schedule and correspond regarding events and programs
    • Other duties as deemed necessary

Qualifications

  • Experience with teaching a variety of age groups and backgrounds
  • Flexible schedule as program times vary, including nights and weekends
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • A vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Astronomy, or related science preferred
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • 3+ years of experience using a telescope strongly preferred

Compensation

  • Hourly Rate: $15-19/hour commensurate with experience
